The Rockstar Uproar Festival is typically one of the last big concert packages of the summer. Where the Mayhem Festival focuses on bands more of the metal genre (with some exceptions), the Uproar leans more towards the rock/hard rock genre. The show pulled into Bristow, VA to the Jiffy Lube Live Amphitheatre on September 2. This beautiful venue is located a roughly thirty miles away from Washington, DC and is sometimes listed as DC on a lot of tour schedules. The bands even referred to the crowd as DC on and off throughout the day.
At first, it seemed as if Mother Nature was not in the mood to rock that day as the skies opened and the rain began to pour. My guess is that Hurricane Isaac must be a fan of easy listening music as he was the blame for all the rain pounded the area. It made for a very difficult road-trip there and a very muddy parking lot coming into the venue. I think many people were deciding to wait out the storm at home as the crowd was slow coming into the venue after the gates opened.
One of the first bands that we saw perform was Mindset Evolution. The band won the grand prize on the 2011 Ernie Ball Music Man Battle of the Bands which included a spot to play on the next year’s Uproar Festival. The guys definitely made the most of their opportunity last year and continue to win fans over this year with a great, high energy performance. Redlight King received a very favorable response from the crowd that was beginning to grow as the rain was finally letting up. These guys have had several songs all over the radio including “Old Man” and the hugely popular “Bullet in my Hand”.
Up next was a red-hot band with a lot of momentum going into the Uproar tour. In This Moment took the stage to deliver songs from their new album Blood, which debuted at #15 and had huge first week sales. Maria Brink and the boys delivered a tight five song set which closed with their song “Blood”. There was more stage props incorporated into the show making it more theatrical, which was a nice touch. Maria did not venture out into the crowd this time to start her circle pit, which was a disappointment for some. It was a bitter sweet day as this was the last day that In This Moment performed as they were only invited to perform on half of the tour. On a positive note, they definitely had the biggest crowd for both of the side stages that day.
Speaking of momentum, Fozzy was another band coming into the tour with a lot of momentum. Their newest album Sins and Bones also saw a huge first week and it definitely had the guys pumped up. Lead singer and WWE Superstar Chris Jericho definitely has the charisma to front a band of any genre. They also had a tight, thirty minute set that featured selection off the new album including the popular single “Sandpaper”, even though M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold was nowhere to be found. The band sounded great and was very animated; they were definitely having a blast on-stage.
P.O.D., touring in support of their latest album Murdered Love, could be considered by many in attendance as the “elder statesmen” of the tour. These guys have been doing what they do for twenty years, but you wouldn’t know it once they hit that stage. They headlined and closed the side stages were one of the best performances of the day. Lead singer Sonny Sandoval knows how to get a crowd fired up. At one point, he even walked out on top of the crowd as they help him up. “Youth of the Nation” and “Alive” drove the crowd into a frenzy. These guys were certainly one of the highlights of the day.
The main stage was now open as Adelita’s Way kicked off things. Rick DeJesus and the boys had the shortest time on the main stage, but still had to make as big as an impact as the headliners. It was tight set that was heavy on selections from their sophomore album Home School Valedictorian. “Invincible”, “Hurt” and their latest hit “Criticize” all went over well with the crowd. It would have been nice to see their set time expanded to be able to include a couple of more song as they were well deserving of more stage time.
Staind were up next as Aaron Lewis and his band mates took the stage to a near packed amphitheater. Staind has that unique ability to deliver a very emotional power ballad and then press the pedal to the floor and crank out a hard rocker. “Right here”, “Something to Remind me”, “Now” and “It’s Been Awhile” were all present and accounted for. As always, the band sounded great, but I just wish they would chug an energy drink before hitting the stage. Rockstar was the tour sponsor, so there were plenty of drinks to be found. I just find their stage show to be a little boring at times.
Godsmack was up next and I was curious to see the reaction that they would receive. The house lights went down and a pre-recorded video began to air of various Godsmack footage accompanied by AC/DC’s “For Those About to Rock”. This certainly got the crowd fired up and the band hit the stage hungry and ready to deliver. The band sounded tight and cranked out the hits one after another. “”Whatever”, “Voodoo” and “I Walk Alone” were all included. I was a little surprised that their cover of “Rocky Mountain Way” off of their latest album wasn’t included.
The drum war between Sully Erna and drummer Shannon Larkin was included this time around which the crowd approved with their horns raised high in approval. I saw Godsmack on Mayhem last year and comparing the two shows, it seems that they were more of an Uproar band. They definitely received a more favorable reception from this crowd and the audience participation seemed to favor the Uproar crowd as well.
Only one band was left to close the day and that was Shinedown. Brent Smith and his band of musicians have been touring like madmen since the release of their latest and highly successful album Amaryllis. The boys have added a ton of pyro to the show and for the most part, it works for them. Shinedown have definitely had their share of radio hits and just about all of them were featured in their set. “Second Chance”, “If You Only Knew”, “Bully” and “Unity” were all on-board as well as “The Sound of Madness” and “45”.
One surprise, depending on how much you read on-line, in their set was when they brought out Maria Brink of In This Moment to perform “Devour” with them. It was a great performance and watching Brent and Maria together it was very apparent they were having a blast. Another great point was when Brent, along with guitarist Zach Myers, went out into the audience and performed “Simple Man” acoustically. This was a great touch to the already powerful performance delivered by these two guys.
Shinedown proved to all in attendance why they were headlining this tour.
Overall, the 2012 Uproar show was a great event, even though it ended the same way it started: with pouring rain. You take that chance with an outdoor show as the weather is an element that none of us can control. It was full day of great music, free Slurpees and free Rockstar Energy Drinks. There many happy fans who got the chance to meet their favorite band and get their autograph too. Even though Papa Roach had to pull out due to Jacoby’s throat problems, it still gets a major two thumbs up this year. Here’s to an even bigger and better 2013 show!

2012 Rock On The Range: Bigger and Badder Than Ever
Rock on the
Range has become one of the premier festivals in music in its short existence
and Columbus, Ohio definitely knows how to throw a party. It spanned two days,
40 bands and a total of 24 hours of music. This year’s event ran from May 19
and 20 and thousands of rockers showed up to rock out and hopefully get to meet
their favorite band. It was hosted by Jose Mangin from Sirius XM/Headbangers
Ball and also saw an appearance from radio personality Lou Brutus.
It only took
a few hours in the blistering sun before many were questioning why they didn’t
bring some sunscreen with them. The high temps combined with an abundance of
cold beer provoked a lot of nudity from both males and females all day long.
The side stages were sponsored by FYE and Jagermeister and they kicked off the
festivities each day at 11:30.
On Saturday,
the smaller Jagermeister stage saw stellar performances from Las Vegas’ own
Otherwise on their first trip to Rock on the Range. In This Moment unveiled
brand new music from their forthcoming album Blood to their Iron Army who was
out in full force that day. The FYE stage saw great performances from New
Medicine as well as P.O.D. and lots of people getting insane in the membrane
with Cypress Hill.
The main
stage on Saturday saw Lzzy Hales and her boys, better known as Halestorm, deliver
rocking set that focused heavily on songs from their new album The Strange Case
Of. Lzzy definitely knows how to command a crowd and had the huge crowd in her
control. Five Finger Death Punch had the biggest sea of crowd surfers again
this year and that didn’t surprise anyone at all. Ivan even pulled some young
kids up on stage to rock out with the band. Ivan also has to be one of the best
frontmen around these days. He really got the crowd all fired up!
Brent Smith
and Shinedown were next to last on the main stage and delivered a set that was
all killer and no filler. Their radio hits were all there, “Second Chance”,
“45”, “If You Only Knew” and “Bully”. Incubus closed out day one with an
impressive set, but many in attendance didn’t understand why Shinedown didn’t
close the day. Brent seems to be in the best shape of his life these days and
his voice was superb.
Day two saw
more high temps and plenty of blistered skin everywhere. The Jagermeister stage
was rocked hard all day from such acts as former American Idol contestant James
Durbin as well as Lacuna Coil, who not only made their ROTR debut but they also
headlined the Jager stage. The crowd was huge for their set and lead singers
Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro showed why their fan base has been continuously
growing here in the states. They delivered a tight set and sounded amazing!
The FYE
stage on Sunday rocked out hard when Trivium took the stage for their ROTR
debut. Matt Heafy and the rest of his band showed why they were a standout at
Mayhem last year. This is a band that you definitely need to see live to fully
appreciate what they have to offer. Headlining the FYW was the thrash pioneers
Anthrax and they unveiled their new “bare bones, guerilla” performance. It’s a high-energy, barrage of song after
song after song. Scott Ian and Joey Belladonna left the crown exhausted and in
need of a cigarette after their insane set.
The main
stage rocked out hard all day long with performances from Escape the Fate, the
Darkness and Mastodon. Megadeth, another thrash pioneer, worked over the crowd
with songs from their lengthy arsenal. Lead singer Dave Mustaine sounded great,
but at times he appeared to be in pain as his movements were very limited.
Marilyn Manson made his ROTR debut and seemed more interested in trying to
shock people than in delivering a solid performance. He did everything from
turning his band on the crowd as he stood there and sang to spitting beer at
the photographers in the pit.
ROTR
favorite Rob Zombie returned this year to close out the day and he brought his
A game with him. The event is one of his favorites to play and he always loads
up his arsenal with special goodies just for the show. Guitarist extraordinaire
John 5 was by his side and they delivered a fun hit filled set that was over
the top with pyro and lights and strange creatures roaming the stage. Rob
always delivers a fun-filled set and gives you your money’s worth.
The days
were long and tiring and left most in attendance with a feeling of having
experienced their best weekend ever. The numerous signings gave fans numerous
chances to get a signed 8x10 of their favorite band. The heat and the alcohol
saw fans dropping like flies all day long, which is one thing I have never
understood. Why pay all that good, hard earned money to get drunk and pass out?
Overall, the 2012 Rock on the Range was a success and the planning starts now
to see how they can top it next year.
Over 30,000 Rock All Day Long At The 2012 Carolina Rebellion
The 2nd
annual Carolina Rebellion moved its stomping grounds to the Rockingham Speedway
in North Carolina this year and the masses showed up to rock. It may have only
been May the 5th, but it felt like it was in the middle of July on
the day of the show. Over 30,000 people showed up in the blistering heat and
humidity and they were treated to a day of rock that they will long remember.
The gates
opened at 9:00am and the people started rolling in by the carload to claim
their spot in front of the three stages used. The smaller stage which was
sponsored by Jagermeister showcased a lot of the newer bands on the bill
including Ghosts of August who kicked off the day at 11:00am , New Medicine,
Red, Redlight King and P.O.D., who are poised for a big comeback with a new
album due out this summer.
The two
bigger stages included the Carolina Stage and the Rebellion Stage, bet you
would have never guessed that. These stages were sponsored by Monster Energy
Drink. The crowds in front of stage went back further than the human eye could
see. As the masses rocked out all day, they managed to stir up a small dust
storm that slowly covered everyone who was there. Let’s not fail to mention the
huge amount of crowd surfing that went on too. Those security guards definitely
got a workout that day.
Weaving the
Fate kicked off the bigger stages as they performed second on the bill, but it
wasn’t until later when Halestorm took the stage that the crowd truly got fired
up. Lzzy Hale and her boys kicked off their set with their #1 song “Love Bites
(So Do I)”. Their set was heavy on new songs off of their new album The Strange
Case Of. The only complaint being heard was that their set was too short.
I would have
to say that Five Finger Death Punch got the award for lighting a fire
underneath the crowd. The crowd erupted in a fury of energy when they hit the
stage and lead singer Ivan Moody fed off of that energy. Their set saw the
crowd surfing increase at least 100%. What an energetic and over the top set
these guys put on.
Recently
inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Slash brought his right hand man Myles
Kennedy with him to perform. He performed some of his solo material, but the
biggest crowd reactions and sing-along’s came when he broke out the Guns and
Roses classics such as “Sweet Child O’ Mine”. Myles has such a powerful voice
and sounded amazing. He had many asking “Axl who?” As the sun went down,
Evanescence took to the stage. Amy Lee has been somewhat of a stranger to North
Carolina since the band’s debut album came out in 2003. Amy sounded great and
treated the fans to a hit filled set.
Korn took
the stage as the air began to cool, but they turned up the heat on-stage and
delivered one of the best sets of the day. The mixed new songs with older
classics such as “Falling Away From Me” as well as their cover of Pink Floyd’s
“Another Brick in the Wall”. A surprise treat was when Brian “Head” Welch took
the stage with the band for the first time in seven years and performed the
classic track “Blind”.
The night
ended with a stellar set from the band Shinedown. Brent Smith and the band took
the stage and delivered in a big way to the crowd. “Sound of Madness”, “If You
Only Knew” and “45” were just some songs from their hit heavy set. Newer songs
from their latest album included the title track “Amaryllis”, “Unity” and the
hit “Bully”. A powerful acoustic version was performed when Smith took center stage
with guitarist Zach Myers. They closed with their smash “Second Chance”.
Several
bands did meet and greets where the purchase of their CD was required to meet
them. FYE had a tent set up to help out with this aspect of the day. Monster
Energy Drink also had a tent set up and a few of the bands did a meet and greet
where the band signed a promo 8x10 photo for the fans. It was a rare treat for
many to get up close to some of the people that they adore and idolize.
Overall, it
was a great show! The people who put the show together listened to the
complaints from last year’s show and tried to remedy all of them. There was a
lot more room for the fans to move around, there were plenty of water and
plenty of food vendors. There was even a hint that it may move to a two day
show next year, plus the Friday night campground show. This year’s show seems
to be regarded as a success and the expansion to another day next year just
seems inevitable.

Halestorm Proves Overnight Sensations Can Take A Long Time

How many times have you heard the first single from a band and thought the band was an overnight sensation? Now, some bands do get lucky and break it big right out of the box. In the case of Pennsylvania’s Halestorm, this is the furthest thing from the truth. I was fortunate enough to see the band on their tour with Shinedown, Chevelle and Staind a while back and caught up with lead singer Lzzy Hale as the band was traveling on the road .
“Yeah, most people don’t realize how long we have been at this. We’ve been doing this for like 15 years now. I was 13 and my brother Arejay, who is our drummer, was 10 when we first started the band. We would play wherever they would let us,” said Lzzy.
Now, most girls that age are not thinking about being the next Lita Ford or Joan Jett. Most are having slumber parties and talking about boys. “You’re right, it was very hard finding young kids that shared our passion for music and succeeding at it. Most didn’t want a career in it or they lacked the drive or parental support that is needed,” replied Lzzy.
The band’s leadoff single from their debut self titled CD is entitled “I Get Off” and about the time I saw the band back in July, it had just begun to blowup. “Oh my god, it has just been amazing. We have the opening slot on the tour and a lot of people have not gotten to the arenas when we are playing our set. I have noticed though, that the crowds are getting a little bigger for our set. I can look out and see people with our t shirts on and they are singing our songs word for word. It’s a very humbling experience,” stated Lzzy.
“I also like the different reactions that “I Get Off” is having with guys and girls. It’s funny because the guys see it as a very sexy and naughty song. On the other hand, girls see it as a very powerful song for them. It’s like they are saying ‘I’m in control here and I am calling the shots”, so it’s pretty funny. I guess it’s great that a song can have different interpretations like that,” stated Lzzy.
So, who does Lzzy draw her influences from? “Well, it’s very flattering to me because I have been compared to some of the greats. I mean Joan Jett, Heart, Janis Joplin, it’s amazing. I have to say that some of the girls from my generation, no offense to any of them, but they just didn’t do it for me. They didn’t have enough power for me. In this gendra today, it shouldn’t be seen as a gimmick when a woman is in front of a band. It’s not a rock band fronted by a girl, it’s a girl fronting a rock band,” said Lzzy.
The band’s CD has a definite old school 80s metal feel to it. The catchy hooks on songs like “What Were You Thinking” and “Dirty Work” show elements of that. There’s even the 80s staple power ballads in songs such as “Bet You Wish U Had Me Back” and “Familiar Taste Of Poison”, on which the aqua net just radiates from your speakers!
The second single, as of the conducting of this interview, had yet to be determined. The CD is very deep in material and probably could go at least 4 singles deep if not further. That kind of feat is almost unheard of given the state of the music industry today. Just recently, the second single and video were chosen for the song “Love/Hate Heartbreak”.
So, does Lzzy have any guilty pleasures that may surprise her fans? “I actually am a pretty good seamstress. I like to make out stage outfits. I take different articles of clothing and try to see how many different outfits that I can make it into. So, yeah, I spend my free time sewing,” said Lzzy. My last question was my question for all bands/artists that I interview. If you were trapped on a desert island with only one store bought CD, what would you want there with you? “It would definitely have to be some Black Sabbath. I seem to be going through this re-appreciation of their music. It’s some powerful stuff,” stated Lzzy.
Check out their debut self titled CD and you will not be disappointed. It is a little retro 80s but still modern sounding. I told Lzzy in our interview that she had a great mix of sexuality and innocence. She can look at you and make you think she wants to jump your bones and then give you a look like she is going to rip your throat out. She is a multitalented front person and she and the boys are serious about their rock. They are still burning up the road and show no signs of letting up. Brave the storm and see what all the fuss is all about. You will not be disappointed!!!
